Heaven is real, but it’s not our home. Heaven is real, but it’s not God’s goal for humanity. Heaven is real. Jesus-followers who walk through death’s door dine in heaven’s halls. But they won’t stay there.
Many Christians and non-Christians misunderstand Christianity because they misunderstand heaven. They falsely believe the Bible teaches that God made us for heaven, that He intends to take Christians to heaven forever when they die. But that belief misses the purpose of Jesus. It dimishes the full range of his accomplishments. It misconstrues his message. That idea is un-biblical not because it’s non-biblical, but because it’s sub-biblical.
Personally, I’m passionate about getting God and heaven right because early on in my Christian journey I got them wrong and it nearly ruined my life. I’m convinced this false idea about heaven actually prevents us from thinking and living as God wants us to. It keeps both Christians and non-Christians from seeing the relevance of Christianity. It keeps them from understanding all the benefits of Christianity for this life. And I have a sneaky suspicion that you yourself might even think this way. Or perhaps this idea at least influences you without you realizing it. That’s why I’m creating this first video series.
I’ve titled it, Our Place in God’s Story: Live on Earth the Life of Heaven. Through a number of short videos, I’ll walk through what the Bible teaches about heaven and the future. I’ll explain how the common assumption that God will take us to heaven forever distorts the biblical picture. I’ll also show why and how that idea is harmful in our relationship with God and how it misdirects our life before we die.
Here’s why this is so important: What you think about your future affects how you live today. It’s that simple. Like building a home, you have to have the right plans to get the right result. Using wrong plans will make you construct the wrong house. Likewise, holding the wrong idea about God’s future for you will lead you to build the wrong life.
Side note. Many Bible teachers say, “so-and-so has gone home to heaven,” or they pray, “Lord, until we come home to heaven.” In general, they are correct. The Christian’s immediate post-death destination is heaven. But heaven is only our home now because that’s where the full presence of Jesus is.
Wherever Jesus is, there our home is. But the Bible teaches Jesus has a plan to earth forever. I didn’t create this series to say all preachers everywhere who speak of heaven as our home are ignorant heretics. No. I simply want you to reexamine what the Bible teaches so you can think more clearly and perhaps more accurately about God’s future plans. It’ll change your life.
In summary, heaven is not the place God made for you or made your for. Regarding space, God made the earth for you and you for the earth. That is your place in God’s story. And it’s only when you know your place, as in your space, can you truly understand your place, as in your role or purpose, in God’s Story. If you misunderstand the space God made for you, you’ll misunderstand your purpose in life.
